Materials available for ‘LWML Sunday,’ Oct. 5
“Opened Eyes … Hearts Ablaze!” is the theme of this year’s materials designed to help congregations celebrate “Lutheran Women’s Missionary League Sunday” on Oct. 5, or an alternate date.
Dr. Robert Roegner, executive director of LCMS World Mission, authored the new materials, using the text from Luke 24:31-32 to develop the worship service ($4.25 per 50 for blank bulletins or $5 for 50 pre-printed bulletins, various item numbers), sermon and outline (free), and children’s sermon (free).

Concordia University, Bronxville hosts Hindu Seminar
The “Seminar on Hinduism and Praxiology of Community Outreach to the Hindu Community” was held in June 2008 at Concordia College—New York, Bronxville, N.Y. Sponsored by the Concordia Institute for World Religions and Evangelism (CIWRE), this meeting brought 46 participants and presenters from as far away as California, Oregon, Washington, Nebraska, Illinois, and Missouri—and there was also a visitor participant from Kazakhstan.
Participants equally represented clergy, laity, seminarians, and students. One commented, “This was an outstanding seminar on evangelism and church outreach that would be useful information to many parishes.”

Carol Becker, long-term missionary in Japan, shared this update on her blog: “Friday the 25th was my last day teaching at Suginami before the summer break, so we made crafts for fun. The yochien, or pre-school age, made jellyfish, since we’ve been learning about the ocean. The first graders made lions, since we were learning about the letter L and it was also a vocab word. Aren’t they adorable when they aren’t causing a ruckus?”

“LINC New Orleans, as part of Southern District Recovery Assistance, Inc., is connecting a network of local missional leaders who are catalysts for justice and empowerment in their communities. Relationships have been built in area public schools where staff and volunteers tutor, counsel, and share leadership development discussions. Connections are being made in neighborhood societies and civic organizations, small business groups, and through simple prayer walks and conversations in local gathering places. These relationships lead to the formation of small groups, usually gathered around a specific social concern.

“Hebrews 13:7 served as one of several ‘theme verses’ for the Golden Jubilee celebration of the India Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELC), held this month on the campus of Concordia Seminary in Nagercoil, India. Hundreds of pastors and lay people from across India and Sri Lanka, along with several visitors from the United States, including me, gathered to celebrate the IELC’s 50th year as an independent church body.

“A number of visiting professors and teams came out to Togo during the last two months-some from other African countries and others from the United States. The Lutheran Center for Theological Studies (CLET) has trained leaders for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Congo (EELC) since 2000. From May 26 to June 6, Rev. Tchibinda Mavoungou, president of the EELC, visited the CLET and offered a course on evangelism. I got the idea for him to teach this course at the CLET when I visited with the EELC in November 2007. I was thoroughly impressed with the EELC’s evangelistic zeal-especially in urban settings. When elected as president of the EELC a few years back, Rev. Tchibinda moved to the capital city of the Republic of Congo, Brazzaville, and immediately set about planting a new Lutheran church. Evangelism is part of their church culture. It was great to have him come and share about that with our students at the CLET.
From long-term missionary Ashley Effken in the Czech Republic

“Every summer for six years now, members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Los Gatos, Calif., have come to Trinec, the town where I live, to teach English at the church’s summer English Camp. This camp is a week-long experience of English learning for middle and high school-aged students and for Christian outreach. About two-thirds of the students who come to English camp are unchurched, but come to improve their language skills.
“This year, 18 members of Holy Cross and Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Churches, came to teach English and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to approximately 50 Czech students. The Americans, the Czechs, and I formed some wonderful friendships and had a number of incredible conversations. So many of the unchurched students had a lot of questions about who this Jesus is, and so many of the churched ones had questions about spiritual growth.

“We finished! The Bocatoma wall took four week weeks to complete, but we are so thankful to the Lord that He did it! I want to give a special thanks to the group that came in the fourth week, they were dedicated to getting the wall finished before they left. We were dismantling a makeshift dam to replace it with a long-term concrete one that will not need to be rebuilt every year. It will increase the water pressure to the local village, allowing farmers to adequately water their crops and provide sufficient drinking, cooking, and bathing water for this small town of 250 called Lucumo. The water canal should now be open and water should now be running to Lucumo’s faucets and irrigation systems!
