LCMS World Mission executive swims lake for mission support
Jeff Craig-Meyer, associate executive director of Development Services at LCMS World Mission, swam the full length of the International Center’s lake on July 16. The International Center houses the offices of LCMS World Mission and other offices of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. The swim was in celebration of the achievement of an employee fundraising goal.
Back in January 2009, during the firestorm of bleak economic news, the seven LCMS World Mission management team members—including Jeff—met a personal challenge to raise $27,000 to be used to support LCMS missionaries and mission work worldwide. When reporting this news to LCMS World Mission employees in January, Craig-Meyer challenged the staff to raise an additional $20,000 by June 30, promising that if the challenge were met, he would swim across the LCMS lake. The challenge was met, and as a result, Jeff plunged into the International Center’s lake around 10:30 on the morning of July 16! After his five-minute swim, Jeff congratulated the staff and board members of LCMS World Mission on meeting the goal.
The management team’s total, when combined with contributions from board members and the staff’s answer to the challenge, surpassed the $20,000-goal by more than 360%. As word spread within the LCMS International Center of the challenge, members of the LCMS World Mission board of directors and employees of the other LCMS ministries and entities housed in the building also contributed. The gifts have been tallied, and together they add to $73,000. When added to a lead gift of $27,000 by LCMS World Mission’s seven-member management team, the ministry raised a total of $100,000 through employee and board member gifts since January. All funds raised will be used to support LCMS mission work and missionaries.
