Pray for Haitians affected by earthquake; LCMS missionary family confirmed safe
Wed, Jan 13, 2010

LCMS World Mission asks you to join in prayer for the people of Haiti suffering from the affects of a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on January 12. Amidst this tragedy, LCMS World Mission is grateful to confirm that GEO missionary and deaconess intern, Alyssa Stone and her daughters are safe.
LCMS World Mission Personnel Care Manager Travis Torblaa reports that Alyssa has verified that she and her daughters, Andrea and Kirsten, are “doing fine.” The family is serving in Les Cayes, a city located about four hours west of the capital that only experienced moderate shaking. The earthquake which struck shortly before 5 p.m. EST, was centered about 10 miles southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
“Please pray for the immediate assistance and ongoing recovery of the Haitian people,” asks Dr. Thomas Zehnder, LCMS World Mission executive director, “as well as for the continued safety of our missionary family there and our Haitian Lutheran brothers and sisters. Pray that people would not despair in this very difficult situation, but that God would use it for His purposes. Ask God to mightily use the Lutheran churches there as instruments of love to reach out to those suffering around them.”
Please lift up missionary Alyssa Stone and family in prayer, giving thanks for their safety. Pray for Alyssa and other LCMS World Mission missionaries in Latin America as they reach out in love to the people of Haiti and for their role supporting the relief and recovery efforts of Lutherans in Haiti.
Learn more about Alyssa’s ministry role in Haiti, her bio, and prayers requests by accessing the family’s online page at www.lcms.org?15195 or their print-ready prayer card at www.lcmsworldmission.org/prayercards.
The Red Cross estimates that about 3 million people-one-third of Haiti’s population-were affected by the earthquake. The most severe damage occurred in and around Port-au-Prince, with many buildings leveled and people still unaccounted for. Haiti is widely known as the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
LCMS World Mission is working cooperatively with LCMS World Relief and Human Care, LCMS districts and congregations, and partner churches to provide relief in a timely fashion.
