Once resistant woman requests Baptism in Guinea

Photo: Andrea Herman

This update was shared by LCMS missionary Andrea Herman, who serves in Guinea, West Africa.

“‘Kay,’ the wife of one of our church leaders, has always resisted her husband’s invitations to church and my invitations to a women’s Bible study — until recently. As the result of dreams, Kay went from having zero interest in Jesus to chasing me down asking when I can teach her about Baptism so she can be baptized! She is also now the one in the household insisting that she and her husband pray together before bed. It has been a wonderful and somewhat shocking turn of events, but we praise God for what He’s doing!

“Please keep this family in your prayers, especially Kay and her children. Even though her desire for Jesus is strong, she has lived a long time without knowing His ways, and her harsh treatment of her children has even forced unbelieving neighbors to confront her about how violently she disciplines them. Please pray that as she and others seek to walk the ‘Jesus road,’ that God would quickly teach them His gentle ways, that their children and neighbors would see this change and desire to follow Jesus too.”

Tomorrow in Sunday School, the lesson is on the conversion and baptism of Lydia during Paul’s second missionary journey. I was searching the LCMS World Mission site to find some missionary news to show/read to the children (The students in my class are fifth to eighth graders.) and found your wonderful “story” about Kay’s baptism! Praise God for opening her heart to receive His gifts of forgiveness and eternal life and praise God for your willingness to be used as His instrument! We will be praying for Kay and her family and for you tomorrow in Sunday School and will continue praying. Who knows– maybe one day one of these students will join you in the mission field! God bless you and keep you safe and well in body and soul.
