The College of Nursing at Bethesda Hospital in Ambur, Tamil Nadu, India, held its groundbreaking ceremony on Feb. 11, 2010. The College of Nursing is an important step forward for the hospital. With the nursing program upgrade, graduates will be fully certified as nurses and the hospital can continue to expand.
"Gender roles are very different in India. The women in India do not hold the same social value as the men. They are expected to perform household duties, follow the will of the man, and in most cases, the men are the ones who are addressed in conversations.
India became the first foreign mission field of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod in 1895. Over the next 50 years, many LCMS missionaries served in India and founded schools. The buildings built during the tenure of the missionaries have fallen into disrepair and have been eaten by termites.
